Robotics

In February 2007 the new LPS after-school Robotics Club was launched. Students are quickly becoming proficient at setting up the laptop computers, opening the software, programming, logging their task steps, and saving their programs.

Each week students perform different challenges. They started by learning how to program humanoid robots. This involved directing fellow students around the library by breaking down complex tasks into a series of simple steps. They soon found it was not quite as easy as they thought! This was followed by programming the robots using the iconic software program, RoboLab. They are learning to make their robots move in various directions and at various power levels, and to operate the NXT sensors, such as ultra sonic, touch, light and sound.

After following the Pilot program, we aim to move students on to Inventor level so that they can devise their own programs to fit a given task. This could include dancing to music, retrieving an object or navigating around a maze.

In August each year the University of New South Wales organises an inter-schools robotics competition called RoboCup.

In 2007 the LPS Robotics Club came Second in the State RoboCup, followed by a Third in the Junior Dance category at the National Robocups held on the Gold Coast!

Well done to the team in being the highest ranked Public School in both competitions!
