About Us
The LPS String Program aims to provide LPS students with the opportunity to learn to play a string instrument. From modest beginnings in 2003, the LPS String Program has now expanded into a substantial tutorial program and has both Junior (Bach) and Senior (Vivaldi) Performance Ensembles. LPS Students from Years K to 6 are eligible to join the program.
Under the careful guidance of our dedicated Conductor Nicholas Tester, the Ensembles have had some exciting musical experiences. Highlights include performances each year since 2004 at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Combined Primary Schools Festival of Instrumental Music and performances at our own annual LPS Music Spectaculars.
The program started with a small pool of six existing players forming a single Ensemble in 2003. The growth of the program has since allowed the formation of two ensembles, giving the opportunity for students to be placed at a level appropriate to their experience. In 2008 the Senior Ensemble, known as the Vivaldi Ensemble, has fourteen students and the Junior Ensemble, known as the Bach Ensemble, has sixteen students. There is also now our new beginners ensemble, Mozart, which begins in term 3. The ensembles meet weekly on Monday afternoon after school in the school hall, and attend the annual weekend music camp together with the school bands.
The LPS String tutorial program provides individual violin and cello lessons after school on school premises from seven highly qualified teachers, Nick Tester, Elizabeth Benedict, Zoe Bloomfield, Ka Yun Kwok, Adrian Mansukani , Hea-Kyong Suh and Perry Tonoyan. In 2008, over forty students are participating in the tutorial program (grown from ten original students in 2004).
Integral to our aim of providing all LPS students with an opportunity to play a string instrument is our instrument hire service. Over the last three years we have purchased and acquired a stock of twenty-one violins and four cellos.
Individual performance opportunities exist for all our string players in our twice yearly String Concerts. Families and teachers enjoy seeing the students perform at their different levels in these supportive and fun events. LPS is lucky to have such a wealth of talent.
The String Committee is an active group of parents who are keen to foster an enthusiasm for music making and performance and to enable the students in the String Program to make a significant contribution to the musical culture of the school. The committee organises and coordinates performance opportunities for the ensembles, as well as organising fund raising events - all such funds going to support instrument and music purchases.
